Before directly addressing those things, there is another thing we must cover. We need to address one of the origins of those lying signs and wonders. So that is where we will start first.
The Origin of Demons
The Bible does not often give us much insight into the heavenly realm of God, what we might call the spirit world. But neither does it completely neglect that mysterious world that is unseen to us and undetectable to our senses or instruments of our creation. Accept that God allow us such an insight, we would never know what was going on. But there was some necessity for God to inform us of a few things going on there for our protection. Our first clue comes very early, in the very first chapter of the Bible.
Genesis 1:26 And God said, let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.
If you read anything previous to that, you see that God simply says let there be this or that. But here, He says "let us!" He is addressing someone else there who is with Him in heaven, in the spirit world. We are later shown how angels, spirits like God, exist in heaven and also one special and particular spirit who had a special relationship with God, being exclusively the only one who was personally created by God, who then allowed this one, His only son, to make all the other spirit creatures in heaven and the universe and us, too. We know him today as Jesus, the first born and only-begotten of God, the Father.
But our first hints and revelations of this come to us right away in Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Next we are shown a scene in heaven.
Job 1:6 And a day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah. And Satan also came among them.
Job 2:1 And it happened that a day came when the sons of God came
to present themselves before Jehovah.
And Satan also came among them to present himself before Jehovah.
I do not quote the whole account but you can look it up. But Satan
comes in among the angels, called the sons of God, as they derived
their creation from Him, by means of His son. They did not give birth
to each other as we do. They do not breed as Jesus makes clear in:
Matthew 22:30 "For in the resurrection [the heavenly one] they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but they are as the angels of God in Heaven."
At this assembly of God's spirit sons, the angels of heaven, Satan is asked if he has noticed what a fine servant Job is. Satan, who earlier had rebelled against God and had corrupted and deceived the first woman, Eve, who then enticed Adam to join her, this Satan had not evidently been impressed with these human creations and found them to be rather weak and pathetic. Although it could be argued that it was just sour grapes, as Satan seemed to want the worship of these creature pretty bad so they could not have been as pathetic as he was claiming.
Nevertheless, Satan's challenges were allowed by God so God could prove that it was not out of selfishness that He forbid angels to be worshiped. Had He simply eliminated Satan, other angels watching might have become suspicious. God was not afraid to be questioned or challenged as He had nothing to hide and knew the truth and that it would become quite clear and evident to others if it was allowed to be tried and settled. God was willing to prove Himself. He set the perfect example for all powers and authorities on earth to follow. They should have nothing to fear by exposure and an open challenge. Truth will always win out over lies . . . always! Love does not fear or run and hide. Love casts fear away and banishes it. So God allows Satan to test Job to see if job will remain loyal to God when things go bad for him. This is a very famous book in the Bible and for very good reasons.
This book give us insight into why Christians often suffer harm and persecution. It alerts us to the fact that there has likely been a dispute between Satan and God, all the way back to the Garden of Eden. I seriously doubt that Satan would have gone down and tempted Adam and Eve without getting God's permission. Satan might be evil but he is not completely stupid. To act without God's permission could get one immediately killed. Satan was not in the mood to die so he no doubt raised the challenge to God before attempting what he did in Eden.
And ever since that time, we can probably assume that challenges and disputes arise often. So we never know when something might have been disputed by Satan who was then allowed a certain amount of permission to act as he liked, within limits, of course. So we would expect that in some circumstances, Satan might have had a hand in manipulating places and events to throw off and deceive people on earth or give them some opportunity to dispute the existence of God, though not so much that the truth is not also apparent with a little faith and exercise of the brain. In the next scripture, we are introduced to the time when the earth was created, long before man was in existence.
4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if you know understanding.
5 Who has set its measurements, for you know? Or who has stretched a line on it?
6 On what were its bases sunk? Or who cast its cornerstone,
7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
And in this passage we see that the spirit sons of God shouted for
joy at the creation of the earth. I quote this to make it apparent
and certain the when the Bible says sons of God, it means one thing,
prior to the first advent of Jesus. It means the spirit sons of God
in heaven who we typically call angels. That is important in order to
understand the next scripture. From this we are given information as
to the origins of the demons and how they cam into existence. That
will be important to know as we will later see.
(GLT) Genesis 6:
1 And it came about that men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them.
2 The sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were good. And they took wives for themselves
from all those whom they chose.
3 And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man; in their erring he is flesh.
And his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.
4 The giants were in the earth in those days, and even afterwards when the sons of God came into the daughters
of men, and they bore to them; they were heroes which existed from ancient time, the men of name.
5 And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was great on the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts
of his heart was only evil all the day long.
In this account, we are told how these spirits took an interest in the fleshly daughters born to men and they gave up their place in heaven to take on fleshly bodily forms of men and take up sexually with the many daughters of men. The resulting children of these marriages were known as giants, which some Bible translations choose to translate as Nephilim, the original Hebrew word which is most commonly translated as giants but can signify fellers, those who make things fall, indicating a sort of bully or brute. They were evidently not very nice which would seem to be born out by the rest of the scripture which says that man was evil all the time and everywhere. So God chose to bring a flood upon the earth to get rid of the accelerated violence that was likely brought about by the angels interfering on earth. Time to start over again.
It was from these events that the heroes, as Moses calls them, the men of name and fame, that many of the gods and myths of later men after the flood were inspired by. Though not readily recognized by archaeologists or historians, I intend to show in a book I am working on, that many of the ancient civilizations discovered and known by archaeologists and historians today, were actually civilizations that were in existence before the flood and were later built on top of by other civilizations who often adopted much of the previous culture that had lived before them, though still standing out much differently in much of their material culture. So these early giants, men of fame, were inspiration for the mythical stories of gods that were so common to many cultures. Early ecclesiastical Christian writers were well aware of this and wrote about it. I will eventually quote some of them in an addition to this at a later time.
But it has always been the understanding of the ancient Hebrews that angels came down to earth and corrupted mankind. This was the understanding of all early post-apostolic Christian writers, too. It came to be disputed in times close to ours because like the classic period Greeks, they believed the tale too amazing to believe. But only recently has that happened, since the birth of the industrial revolution, primarily. But an examination of other parts of the Bible makes it clear how the Bible understood it. Jude refers to the angels who rebelled before the flood by forsaking their proper position in heaven, the spirit realm.
5 Now I desire to remind you, though you were once for all fully informed, that he who saved a people
out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
6 And the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling have been kept by him
in eternal chains in the nether gloom until the judgment of the great day.
1 Peter 3:
19 in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison,
20 who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark,
in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.
Peter refers to God's patience in waiting for the ark to be built before destroying the materialized angels and their offspring from earthly women. He also refers to this in his second letter, too.
2 Peter 2:
4 For if God did not spare sinning angels, but delivered them to chains of darkness, thrust down
into Tartarus, having been kept to judgment;
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah the eighth, a herald of righteousness,
bringing a flood on a world of ungodly ones;
6 and covering the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with ashes, He condemned them with an overthrow,
setting an example to men intending to live ungodly.
Now I would like to point out that there were any number of ways that God could have wiped out the ungodly and rebellious ones. But perhaps, though by no means certain, He chose the way He did, due to a dispute with Satan as to how it ought to be done. God might have chosen a flood so as to leave physical evidence, or it might have been Satan's preferred way so as to seem so incredible and unlikely to a doubting skeptical world puffed up with their own understanding of the natural world and their new found industrial power. But regardless of why, we know it happened to correct a bad situation and preserve man on earth and progress at a more reasonable pace toward the ultimate result of man's sin and rebellion against God. We are also informed on a later event in time, near the end, near the last day, when Jesus would return for a 2nd time to finally bring the corrupt evil world to an abrupt end and reward His servants, both the living and the dead through resurrection.
7 And war occurred in Heaven, Michael and his angels making war against the dragon.
And the dragon and his angels made war,
8 but they did not have strength, nor yet was place found for them in Heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, the old serpent being called Devil, and, Satan; he deceiving
the whole habitable world was cast out onto the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Here we are given the vision of Satan and all those angels who have rebelled along with him and cooperate with him against God and those of God's on earth. These are those rebellious angels who came down to earth to breed with earthly women and violate their positions and places with God. It is important for us to know about them, though the Bible is quite careful to avoid giving them much attention but just enough so that we are not unaware of their existence and influence from the spiritual realm of existence. For these are the ones who continue to exert a limited influence over the earth and men. But God has placed limits on their influence and sphere of power. And then God tells us what to avoid in order to escape that power and influence of these wicked rebellious spirits.
With that in mind, we want to give careful attention to what God
instructs for us, knowing that it is for our own protection and
understanding that we are informed and instructed as we are by God.
That is why obedience to God is so important for us. He knows what we
do not, and though He informs us to some degree, it may be that Satan
demands that we only be given the very limited basic essentials and
that enough be left out that we have to trust in God to some degree.
So faith and obedience are salvation for us. If we stray from God's
commands, we could fall into great harm. I am going to show you how
by examining the lying signs and wonders.
Today, as also in past times, witchcraft enjoys a certain amount of popularity and perhaps even gained more popularity as of recently. Psychic investigation and services have also gained more attention. Contacting the dead is still as big as ever and we now have what they have called channeling, in which supposed spirits of the past communicate through people who often go into a trance to serve as a mediator. There were also many practices of the past that may have been lost over time, too. The law of Moses deals with these many sorts of things, forbidding them to be practiced. See for yourself.
9 When you come to the land which Jehovah your God is giving to you, you shall not learn to do according
to the hateful acts of those nations.
10 There shall not be found in you one who passes his son or his daughter through the fire, one that uses divination,
an observer of clouds, or a fortuneteller, or a whisperer of spells,
11 or a magic charmer, or one asking of familiar spirits, or a wizard, or one inquiring of the dead.
12 For all doing these things are an abomination to Jehovah. And because of these filthy acts
Jehovah your God is expelling these nations before you.
13 You shall be perfect with Jehovah your God.
14 For these nations whom you shall expel listen to observers of clouds, and to diviners.
But as to you, Jehovah your God has not allowed you to do so.
Here are two other versions that use similar but slightly different words to describe the practices forbidden.
(RSV) Deuteronomy 18:
10 There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,
any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,
11 or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
(BBE) Deuteronomy 18:
10 Let there not be seen among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter go through the fire,
or anyone using secret arts, or a maker of strange sounds, or a reader of signs, or any wonder-worker,
11 Or anyone using secret force on people, or putting questions to a spirit, or having secret knowledge,
or going to the dead for directions.
Now the question is bound to come up, why does God forbid these things? As we explored earlier, there are angels who were created by God and disobeyed God. These are commonly called demons. It is they who have been given (allowed) to exercise certain limited powers in certain kinds of situations. Where any false god or rites or rituals performed to or for a false god, or practices forbidden by the real and only true God, these are given to the demons to do as they wish. This is why God, the one called Jehovah, forbids us to use these practices. He does not listen to these practices or normally work through them. Some of these practices, such as communicating with the dead are not possible since God will not resurrect them till after the great judgment day reserved for a future time.
These rebellious angels, these demons, gladly pose as these dead people to make us believe that these people are still alive and that God is a liar. And by deceiving us and tempting us into communicating with them, we come under their deceptive influence and are more vulnerable to being misled and fooled. All the various things forbidden to us are used to help mislead people and give them the wrong ideas and understanding of things. And some of the practices honor other gods, which is obviously wrong in God's eyes as is shown in the 10 commandments. Often, the demons will perform for those who engage in these forbidden practices so as to mislead them and displease and dishonor the real God in heaven. One could even come under the demons' direct influence. That would not be good. All in all, these practices will lead you down the wrong road away from the true God, Jehovah.
Let us consider some of these practices to see how they might harm us and how God protects us from these if we listen to Him.
Passing a son or daughter through the fire, which naturally killed them, was sort of sacrificing them to a God. It was known to be done to one god called Molech, Melech, or Moloch. Worshipping other gods and doing things God detests such as sacrificing children are clearly wrong.
Divination in various forms such as observing and interpreting clouds, stars, tarot cards, entrails, E-ching sticks, or any other numerous way of discerning the future or asking questions, and seeking guidance was wrong. Fortune tellers would come under this topic. Demons are allowed to respond to such things and will almost certainly use such opportunities to lie and mislead people. Jehovah's people use the Bible and the advice or wise men of God, studied in the scriptures, to help them along in life. And they pray to their God, Jehovah as well, for His blessing and enlightenment.
Charms and spells are another danger and a form of poor mental hygiene. God allows us all to choose freely and make decisions for ourselves. When we want others to like us or do something for us by some magic force, what are we saying? We could describe this as using force to get someone to do as we wish. Forcing people to do things when they do not want to or are not actually inclined that way could be considered rape. It at least violates how God wanted us to treat each other and how God treats us by giving us free will and choice. Further, when we attempt such charms or spells, we are invoking and inviting the powers of the demons. Definitely not a good idea. This is why these are likely forbidden.
Contacting the dead or acting as a channeler. To inquire of the dead when they do not exist makes no sense. But this is an attempt by Satan and his pals, the demons, to make us believe in life after death as spirits or souls. And since it conflicts with what God says, then one might conclude that God is a liar or that He has not told us everything. An attempt to deceive and mislead. So we want to avoid speaking or inquiring of the dead.
Witches, Warlocks, Wizards, some types of medicine men, witch doctors and others who perform many of these rituals are not allowed by God. They are agents, even if innocently or unknowing, of the devil and his gang. We would avoid all such persons when they are performing in those capacities and positions. We would not want to be one ourselves, either.
As verses 12-14 point out, the nations that God was driving out
from before the Israelites were guilty of these things God hated. God
forbid Israel to do such things. Indeed, if Israel started to do such
things, "he" would also be similarly punished as the previous nations
Now before considering the next topic of prophets and predictors, notice what James has to say first.
13 Let no one being tempted say, I am tempted from God. For God is not tempted by evils, and He tempts no one.
14 But each one is tempted by his own lusts, having been drawn out and having been seduced by them.
15 Then being conceived, lust brings forth sin. And sin being fully formed brings forth death.
God does not tempt people or try to make them fall, what we might call entrapment, today. Of course, many law enforcement agencies are great for doing this. They say they are technically not doing this because they do not solicit people to commit crimes. But that is not true. They often offer drugs to catch distributors and dealers. And while they do not technically proposition people for sex, they do try to appear as if they are "working the streets" as prostitutes and they do not tell people to get lost but ask them to be more specific in what it is they are asking. They lead them along to some degree. They are being coy and know perfectly well what the people are asking for. I still say it is entrapment. Prostitutes do not put up signs to advertise, but they make it clear by their conduct what they are doing and vice police often do the same. It is entrapment as far as I am concerned and it is wrong. The drug stuff is certainly wrong. But God does not do such things. To Him, this is very wrong.
Those who can see God as being behind life and the universe would be foolish to think that God is really so wicked, vain, or stupid as to not be able to sense right and wrong, or give us good directions, or have good intentions Himself. He is far more insightful, wise, and powerful than that. Good people will give God credit for being even more so than they are. They will believe the best about Him. So we should not think bad about Him or expect bad, or think that He can not be trusted. So we would not expect Him to trick or trap as we do to our own in our system. However, as God, He does have the right to judge people and take their lives if He so judges it to be appropriate. But it will be according to laws that He has openly declared to people so that they have a chance to obey. Or He will give them signs and wonders so as to make them stop and think and decide against further action.
We also know from earlier that it is Satan who likes to tempt and
try us to see what our motives are, if they are pure and righteous.
With this in mind, we will consider what is next said in the law of
1 If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams rises among you, and gives you a sign or a wonder,
2 and the sign or the wonder which he foretold to you occurs, saying, Let us go after other gods
which you have not known, and let us serve them,
3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams. For Jehovah your God
is testing you, to know if you love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 You shall walk after Jehovah your God, and you shall fear Him. And you shall keep His commandments,
and you shall hear His voice, and you shall serve Him, and you shall cleave to Him.
God has, through Moses, made it clear to Israel and of course, to us, to whom the law has been passed down, what God requires and what He forbids. And He warns us to avoid those who do miracles, signs, and wonders and then tell us to follow other gods or rules. God says He is testing us. Now James told us that God does not do that and now we hear that He is. Is the Bible contradicting itself or is there something we are missing. Yes, there is something we are missing.
God, through the law, quite frequently tells us something that we are to understand as the way we should look at something, how to frame it, so to speak, or as we put it today, how to put the right spin on it. So when we encounter a false prophet leading us to other gods, we are to view it as IF it were God, Himself, testing us to see if we are loyal. So in this case, He is making it clear before hand that they and we will be tested, although technically, it is not God, Himself, who is testing us. It is the devil and his helpers who are testing us. But at least we are being warned that we will be tempted and to avoid it. In fact, as those who know the Bible fairly well certainly know, the book of Job is about Satan challenging God and testing Job as I wrote earlier. Satan has been allowed such testing and so have his brothers in crime, the demons, also been allowed to test and deceive if possible. But any who believe and obey God will not be harmed or fooled by such testing. They know what is going on behind the scenes, so to speak.
This is why it is so important to diligently know God's word, the Bible, and be guided by it and obey it so as not to violate His commands and subject ourselves to the control or influence of the demons in the spirit world. Though God is not always specific in His reason for a command, often He does make it clear why He commands something. If we get to know the Bible well enough, we learn about these things that have gone on in the spirit world so as to understand why we should avoid certain practices.
Now if someone should say, if God warns of entrapment, how can you fault police enforcement when they do it. I respond. God does not like and will not try or test anyone. But since we are part of a trial and test being conducted between God and he who challenges God and says bad things about Him, God allows him, Satan, to try to prove his point. God is confident in what He says so He is not afraid to be challenged or tested. In His being tested, He has to allow us to be tested as well. It is not He who really tests us but He warns us that someone else is going to be testing us. So law enforcement should not be testing us. If they are aware of others testing us, fine. But the law enforcement should not be the testers, tempters, or entrappers, themselves. Let's continue where we left off in the Bible.
5 And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken apostasy
against Jehovah your God, who is bringing you out of the land of Egypt, and has redeemed you
out of the houseof slaves, to drive you out of the way in which Jehovah your God has commanded you to walk.
And you shall put away evil from among you.
God's command to Israel, when they had been given their own nation, and required by God to maintain His laws and instructions, we to execute anyone who tried to lead people away from Jehovah to other gods. And notice the goal and purpose of these false prophets? It is drive us out and away from what God has commanded us. That is always the goal of these false prophets and lying signs and wonders.
6 If your brother, your mother's son, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom,
or your friend who is as your own soul, shall entice you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods,
which you have not known, you and your fathers,
7 of the gods of the people around you, those near you or far off from you, from one end of the earth
even to the other end of the earth,
8 you shall not consent to him, nor listen to him, nor shall your eye have pity on him, nor shall you spare nor hide him.
9 But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and the hand of all the people last.
10 And you shall stone him with stones, and he shall die, for he has sought to drive you away from Jehovah your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves.
11 And all Israel shall hear and fear, and shall not again do any such wicked thing as this among you.
There is a lot in these few verses. For one, no matter how closely related the apostate is, we would turn them in and kill them if we were living in ancient Israel. We, and all the people afterwards right behind you. Israel was not to have any pity for him, or hide and cover the crime over. And the result or purpose? All those in Israel would be very afraid to commit such a crime against Jehovah, the God of Israel. We call this deterrence. It is a well known and practiced principle among armies and political offices, too. They sometimes pretend that deterrence can sometimes be too severe and unjust but they lie. They do it all the time. God does it at times as well.
12 If, in one of your cities which Jehovah your God is giving you to live in, you hear one saying,
13 Certain men, sons of Belial, have gone out from among you and have drawn away those who live in their city,
saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known;
14 then you shall inquire and make search, and ask carefully; and, behold, if the thing is truly established,
that this abominable thing has been done among you,
15 you shall surely strike those who live in that city by the mouth of the sword, destroying it completely,
and all that is in it, and its livestock, with the mouth of the sword.
16 And you shall gather all its spoil into the middle of its open place, and shall burn the city with fire,
and all its spoil, completely, before Jehovah your God. And it shall be a heap forever;
it shall not be built any more.
17 And not any of the cursed thing shall cleave to your hand, so that Jehovah shall turn from the fierceness
of His anger, and shall give mercies to you, and shall love you, and shall multiply you,
as He has sworn to your fathers,
18 when you listen to the voice of Jehovah your God, to keep all His commandments which I am commanding
you today, to do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah your God.
If a whole city should turn against Jehovah and serve other gods, then that whole city should be wiped out, but only after having very carefully searched and inquired about the matter and not rushing to judgment. The city and everything in it was to be destroyed and never rebuilt.
This means men, women, and children; something we would consider
ghastly today but God does not see things as our hypocritical society
of today sees them. Anyway, this would serve as a good example and
reminder as well as a deterrence to others who might be tempted by
such conduct. Further, if Israel did eliminate such a city, then God
would refrain from judging the rest of them for this crime and would
bless them. On the other hand, if they did not, then all Israel would
be punished for this wicked unfaithfulness. It was vitally important
that Israel, and anyone for that matter, obey God as much as
possible. It is precisely because people have not listened to God and
obeyed Him that we have so many problems of so much severity. When we
obey Him as much as possible, we minimize the harm we do to ourselves
and each other.
18 I shall raise up a Prophet to them from among their brothers, one like you; and I will put My words in His mouth;
and He shall speak to them all that I shall command Him.
19 And it shall be, whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I will require it at his hand.
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, that which I have not commanded him to speak,
and who speaks in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if you say in your heart, How shall we know the word which Jehovah has not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah, if the thing does not happen or come about,
that is the thing which Jehovah has not spoken; that prophet has spoken it proudly;
you shall not be afraid of him.
Now we have a problem here, don't we? If someone claims to be a prophet and makes a prediction, and it does not come true, Israel was to understand him to be a false prophet and was to judicially kill him. But earlier, we were told that if a prophet performed a sign or wonder such as a prediction, and it came true, but told us to serve other gods, then Israel was also to stone him. But how are we to know if a prophet predicts something or performs a sign or miracle, and tells us something new about God? How do we know if it is true or not? Good question.
We are discussing false or lying signs and wonders. But there are also true signs and wonders as well. True signs and wonders are very dramatic and overwhelming. They are not subtle or weak. They definitely get attention. In this way, when a prophet comes and great signs and wonders take place through him, we can feel reassured that God is working through him.
So by performing some great and amazing signs and wonders, God establishes the teachings and laws that He wants to communicate to the people and have them obey. Moses was the first one God used to establish the word of God in great, very powerful, and fear-inspiring ways. First, there were the 10 plagues of Egypt, right? The demons were allowed to copy some of the small signs and wonders in the first plague or two. God had no doubt granted to the demons long before this time of Moses, to do such things. But in order to convince the people, both Egyptians and Israelites of the origin and power of Moses' words in the name of Jehovah, a particular God making great claims and boasts and requiring things of Pharaoh and Israel, Jehovah does works far greater than that allowed to the demons or the devil.
The magic practicing priests were not able to imitate all the later plagues that God inflicted in Egypt. In addition, God caused a pillar of cloud in the day and a pillar of fire by night to lead Israel. Then He divided the waters of the Red Sea to allow Israel to escape and brought the waters back together to drown Pharaoh and all his army. God provided manna for Israel to eat in the desert and water out of dry earth and rocks for them to drink. So many great signs, miracles, and wonders were provided by God so as to give Israel ample reason to trust in Him and believe His chosen servant, Moses. And when Moses was given the law and other instructions from God, Israel had no reason to doubt or question what Moses told to them. God backed it with every magnificent sign and wonder.
Now without these signs and wonders, neither Israel, nor we, would have any reason to believe the words handed down by Moses. Further, when Pharaoh was told by Jehovah through Moses to let God's people go, Pharaoh had good reason to listen. His own gods could not begin to match the same great things that were performed through Moses. Pharaoh should have humbled himself and given in to the demands of Moses. Pharaoh was quite stupid and unreasonable in ignoring such great and powerful demonstrations of power. There was every reason to respect the awesome power and signs performed at the hands of Moses.
So the demonstration of these great powers and signs gave weight and credibility to the writings Moses gave to the people. This is how we know they are from God and not the invention of Moses, himself. These writings could then be used to judge the messages of others who would later come and speak to Israel in the name Jehovah, urging them to return to their God and obey Him. And as these offered new prophecies, the people and kingdom could allow time to pass to see if the prophecies made came true or not. Often, prophets would also do great signs and wonders to verify their words and prophecies. Many times these signs and wonders were not always specifically mentioned by the things the prophets wrote. So we are not always told that a prophet performed a sign or miracle or an immediate prophecy. But it likely took place at times without being written down as was the case with Jesus and the Apostles and their many unrecorded works of great marvel. But many times, prophecies would come true that the prophets spoke in the name of Jehovah and they would support the law of Moses and so they would be deemed reliable and trustworthy, and to have their origin from God.
It could also often happen that some other prophecies were given to happen many years after. If they had many prophecies that had already come true, and they were spoken in the name of Jehovah and were harmonious with Moses, then Israel had good reason to accept the ones not yet fulfilled as being as good as fulfilled. And Israel would later be given more signs and wonders by others who would verify those long range prophecies.
So naturally, if other men came along and performed great signs
and wonders among the people of Israel, then not only were their
words assured by God, but if they should assure the words of past
prophets that have yet to be fulfilled, then we could also rely on
these past prophets and the prophecies they made that have yet to be
fulfilled. But in all cases, great signs and wonders were how things
were verified as coming from God. We would naturally expect all the
words and ideas to harmonize. God is consistent so it is right to
expect that of Him. So below I have a spelled out list of
qualifications that determine if a prophet speaks the words of the
God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob/Israel, whose name is Jehovah, our
heavenly Father, or of someone else or of himself, and not those of
Here for your consideration are numerous scriptures showing the extreme importance and value of powerful works performed for the purpose of showing that God was with these men who were delivering a message from God. So this message was reliable and believable and it was a message people could put absolute faith in. The works and the teachings were presented in ways that were clear, acceptable, and plain to people. The miracles were dramatic and blatant so that you just could not miss them. You did not need to be a brain surgeon, rocket scientist, or all around genius to get the impact of what was presented. It was very evident to all.
John 5:20 For the Father loves the Son and shows to Him all things which He does. And He will show Him greater works than these in order that you may marvel.
And if we marvel, we will also believe, right?
John 5:36 But I have the greater witness than John's, for the works which the Father has given Me, that I should finish them, the works which I do themselves witness concerning Me, that the Father has sent Me.
Jesus is making some big promises and he will deliver, too.
John 10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and you did not believe. The works which I do in the name of My Father, these bear witness about Me.
One might doubt Jesus' teaching but you can't argue with his works that are clearly from God.
John 10:32 Jesus answered them, I showed you many good works from My Father. For which work of them do you stone Me?
The works were clearly from the Father so the actions of those wanting to stone were without logic or explanation in their wanting to kill Jesus.
37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me.
38 But if I do, even if you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may perceive
and may believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.
The works should have been convincing, even if his words and teachings were not. The works give us reason to believe the teaching. This goes for the next verse, too.
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words which I speak to you
I do not speak from Myself, but the Father who abides in Me, He does the works.
11 Believe Me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me; but if not, believe Me because of the works themselves.
12 Indeed, I tell you truly, He that believes in Me, the works which I do, that one shall do also,
and greater than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
John 15:24 If I did not do the works among them which no other did, they had no sin. But now they both have seen and also have hated Me and My Father.
This was a very interesting one. Jesus pointed out that if he had not done all the many amazing works he did, they would have no reason to believe him and would have no sin. But the works did take place and their rejection and hatred of Jesus was also a clear hatred and rejection of his Father as well. They were pure evil, not paying any attention to the incredible works.
1 And it happened when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples,
He left there to teach and to proclaim in their cities.
2 But hearing in the prison of the works of Christ, sending two of his disciples,
3 John said to Him, Are You the One coming, or are we to look for another?
4 And answering, Jesus said to them, Going, relate to John what you hear and see:
5 The blind receive sight, and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear;
the dead are raised, and the poor are given the gospel. [Isa. 61:1 quoted].
Jesus told them to tell John what they saw. In other words, the works should speak for themselves without Jesus saying ever a word.
Matthew 13:54 And coming into His own
country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were
and said, Where did this one get this wisdom, and the powerful works?
Matthew 13:58 And He did not do many works of power there because of their unbelief.
In this one, the faith of those in that area was so bad that Jesus did not bother to show them much.
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.
2 And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead,
and because of this, powerful works are working in him.
Herod was a more than a little amazed and a little spooked, too. He had John executed and now Jesus was doing all this stuff. He thought it might have been John returning from the dead or something. So the works were obviously quite amazing and impressive.
13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the works of power which have been occurring
in you had occurred in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes!
The Jews were very obstinate and hard headed. As Jesus pointed out, other nations would have received him much more eagerly that Israel had. A classic showdown on the part that great works played in accepting Jesus is shown in the gospel of John.
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.
14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
15 The Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them,
"He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."
16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the sabbath."
But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was a division among them.
17 So they again said to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?"
He said, "He is a prophet."
Notice how the Pharisees were being picky and trivial. Jesus was clearly empowered by God when able to do the kinds of work he is doing. But they find fault with him for doing it on the Sabbath, which is a bunch of crap. Jesus had long ago pointed out how priests work on the Sabbath and are guiltless. But they are not interested in the truth. An argument broke out, for some were of the opinion that given these incredible works, Jesus could only be from God. The opinion of the blind man that had been healed by Jesus was that Jesus was indeed a prophet. The man's parents are called in and they were afraid of being thrown out of the synagogue so they insisted that their son speak for himself since he was of age as John puts it. Let's see what next happens.
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him,
"Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner."
25 He answered, "Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see."
The young man gave a wonderful reply. One thing he did know was that he could now see whereas before, he could not. He was not about to let the good work be denied.
26 They said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
27 He answered them, "I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you too want to become his disciples?"
28 And they reviled him, saying, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from."
The young man is becoming sarcastic with them for they are trying to deny the implication of the amazing work that Jesus has performed. Men can not do these things except by the power of God yet here they are denying it. They say they are disciples of Moses but they are only followers of him because he was verified with great works. Now another man comes along, as predicted by Moses that another would come, and performs even greater works than Moses. Yet to him, the Pharisee do not listen. They say they do not know where Jesus comes from. Listen to what the formerly blind man says.
30 The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.
31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if any one is a worshiper of God
and does his will, God listens to him.
32 Never since the world began has it been heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind.
33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
The young man sums it up pretty well. If Jesus were not from God, he could do relatively little or nothing in comparison to works like these. It is the works that testify as to the origins of Jesus' power and therefore, of his words and commands, too. They are clearly from God.
Acts 7:22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of Egyptians and was powerful in words and in works.
Well, if you know the story of the Exodus, you know how true this is. Again, this is why we could trust and believe Moses. His works testify to who was behind him as was the case with Jesus. Since covenants were established with both men, plenty of works were needed with both men so that people could rely on those contracts with God as really being from God and not just the inventions of Moses or Jesus.
Acts 8:13 And Simon himself also believed,
and being baptized was continuing steadfastly with Philip.
And seeing miracles and mighty works happening, he was amazed.
11 And God did uncommon works of power through the hands of Paul,
12 so as even handkerchiefs or aprons from his skin to be brought onto those sick,
and the diseases to be released from them, and the evil spirits to go out from them.
Here we see great works take place from God but through Paul. The reason for the works was not to show off only. It was done so that people would listen to the teachings of God that Paul would speak of. And the works were impressive, weren't they?
1 Corinthians 12:28 And God placed some in the church: firstly apostles; secondly, prophets; thirdly, teachers; then works of power; then gifts of healing, helps, governings, kinds of languages.
2 Corinthians 12:12 Truly the signs of the apostle were worked out among you in all patience, in miracles, and in wonders, and by works of power.
The thing is, very little attention at all is given specifically to the particular works that the Apostles did. They gave plenty of details of some of Jesus" deeds but hardly any of those he sent forth. The reason, without a doubt, was because the works were not the focus of importance. It was the teachings they gave out. The works were only done to convince people that these men were certainly from God and should be listened to and obeyed. And so they were.
Colossians 1:29 for which also I labor, struggling according to the working of Him who works in me in power.
Hebrews 2:4 God bearing witness with them by both miracles and wonders, and by various works of power, even by distribution of the Holy Spirit, according to His will.
This, of course, is a big scripture that emphasizes what I have been saying all along. The works testify to who is behind them, namely God, and that, therefore, also testify to those through who the works take place.
Hebrews 3:9 there where your fathers tempted Me, testing Me, and saw My works forty years.
He points out that Israel saw many incredible works for 40 years. Still they did not show proper faith and obedience which was quite inexcusable, of course.
From all these many scriptures, we can see the great importance
and value that signs, works, and portents played in helping people
believe in the message delivered by those through who these works
took place. This message could be relied upon and trusted as one
coming directly from God and worth putting faith in and obeying.
Further, these messages were written down and preserved so that they
could be referred to and not get distorted by poor memory or corrupt
Matthew 12:32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, not in this age nor in the coming one.
Mark 3:29 but whoever commits blasphemy against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness to eternity, but is liable to eternal judgment
Luke 12:10 And everyone who shall say a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven Him; but the ones blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.
One might wonder what those scriptures are about. There has been plenty of speculation about them. But given what we considered, I think it should be clear from what Jesus said that even if we should doubt or find fault with him or his teachings, we should not be able to ignore the powerful works taking place through him due to the obvious blessing of God. So though we might find something objectionable to his teaching, we will accept it, because we know, because of the works, that his words are from God and are reliable. So to ignore the works, as Pharaoh did and as the Scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees did, would be to clearly, beyond any doubt, reject God. This would be unforgivable. Judas Iscariot witnessed many powerful works take place through Jesus and yet betrayed him. He sinned against the Holy Spirit and can not be forgiven. Same for the scribes and Pharisees and others like them who helped get Jesus crucified. They can not be forgiven.
These great and powerful works and wonders of the Holy Spirit are direct and overwhelming evidence. If there were no such works taking place, then it could be forgiven that they might not be convinced. But to see and witness such greatness and power, there can be no excuse left. So Jesus said that blasphemy and sin against the Holy Spirit, or should I say more properly, against the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, can not be forgiven. Many today imagine that there can be sins against the Holy Spirit that can not be forgiven. I would only say that this is only possible if those same powerful works and wonders performed by Jesus and the Apostles, also take place before our eyes. To my knowledge, those works do not take place today. So it is likely that it is not even possible to sin against the Spirit today since it does not manifest itself in the same power and dramatic way that it did with Moses or Jesus or his Apostles. But there could be an exception and the Bible indicates there is.
What we are witnessing in our day (at this writing, 2005 AD) is the incredible fulfillment of prophecies uttered anywhere from about 2000 years ago to perhaps 3500 years ago. That they should be coming about exactly as foretold, evidently is judged by God to be nearly the same as seeing the powerful works of Jesus, the Apostles, or other prophets, such as healings or resurrections, the plagues of Egypt, or the parting of the Red Sea. If we ignore these prophetic warnings and do not obey God, we shall be judged and miss out on everlasting life. So the period of time we live in now is a very serious and important one. To ignore it is to die and never be resurrected ever!
But if such great works of the past were to suddenly start up again, then indeed, sins against the Holy Spirit would again be possible, even before the great day of judgement promised by God from long ago. Given that God shall judge the whole world, it leads one to wonder if there might not be some last minute powerful works from God in these last days, just prior to the big judgement and end. On the other hand, God deems the many marvelous prophecies being dramatically fulfilled in our day as being of an outstanding and powerful sign which is inexcusable to ignore. But safe to say, we should be slow to discredit the prophecies being fulfilled from here on in.
I suppose there could also be a point where one comes to "see," know, and understand too much about God to sin in some ways. Of course, we are all weak and sin, even when we know better. But perhaps there could be a point too far. But that is only speculation and not certain. Surely David knew that adultery was wrong and he had surely known messages and blessings from God. And yet not only did he commit adultery, but also had the husband done away with to avoid getting caught in his adultery. David most clearly knew better, but God still saw reason to forgive. So it is very hard to argue, though not impossibly so, that there might be a point too far. Maybe David had a weakness for the flesh. Maybe it was that he caught sight of her by accident and was overcome by her appeal.
It could be that some might not have nearly as much weakness in that area or had a different circumstance which was not as excusable. We could speculate all day. But the scriptures make it clear that no matter how far we have gone, there is always a way to come back, excepting the sin against the manifest miracles of God and His spirit. So I think it important not to make any sin against the Holy Spirit, which is a sin against the manifest powerful miraculous works that God has at various times performed on earth in the sight of men through men. But as for any sin otherwise, we must allow it to be forgivable in the eyes of God and men and if God judges otherwise now or later, that is His right and choice to do so.
My main point is that we can only say for sure that those who
ignore or have ignored powerful works like those that took place
through Jesus, clearly sinned against and blasphemed the Holy Spirit
and that to the best of my knowledge, we have not had such signs,
works, and wonders in our day so that it would not be possible at
this time to sin against the Spirit. Things will change. There is a
test coming that all must pass in order to receive salvation. To fail
it will be to sin against the holy spirit and permanently die. But for
now at least, we have cleared up something that has been very
perplexing to many for so long. It need not be that way any more.
8 But even if we, or an angel out of Heaven, should announce a gospel to you beside what we preached to you, let him be accursed.
9 As we have said before, and now I say again, If anyone announces a gospel to you beside what you received, let him be accursed.
This scripture, along with others we previously considered, give us the standards with which to make judgment. Here is what we can conclude from these about prophecies, commands, instructions, history and the like that make up the word of God, the Bible.
1. It must harmonize and be in agreement with the original installment of laws and commands given by Moses, who was established through great signs and wonders from God and accepted and preserved by His established priesthood.
2. If it further extends the things of Moses, it must be accompanied by great signs and wonders and be a logical extension of what has already been handed down, promoting the true worship of God.
3. It must help fulfill God's purpose or be related to His purpose and will. All things that come from God are given for a purpose and reason, in someway or another, relating to Him, His worship, and His purpose.
4. If there are any new prophecies, they must be in God's name and they must come true, or if for a yet appointed time, you can wait and see or it can be accompanied by more great signs and wonders from that prophet or vouched for by someone else who performs great signs or wonders in the name of God, in order to trust that it will come true.
5. It must have been authored within the time frame and location of God's outworking and on-going will and purpose. That means in connection with God's established priesthood and nation, which were the only things that were established with great and powerful works, signs, and portents.
What this means is that you can not claim to have rediscovered a long lost book of the Bible, if it has not been previously known and established. There are several today like the gospel of Thomas, of Judas, or other such non-sense. The book or Mormon also fails on this account, never having been recognized by the Mosaic priesthood or the Apostles.
So even if a spaceman or an angel comes down out of heaven in a UFO and says he is Christ or has new directions for us, don't believe him. Or ask him to bring back people who have been dead for 3 days and see if he can do it. And even then, if he also says the rules have changed, then let him be accursed.
In applying these standards to discern what belongs in the Bible as an inspired work of God, we would look for books and authors who are established by great works, or whose prophecies came true and harmonized with other books that were established by great works such as the law given to Moses. Or a book in question, if endorsed by someone blessed with powerful works, would then be received as if from God. For example, Jesus often quoted various prophets as did the Apostles, too. The Apostles verified the inspiration of the Hebrew scriptures translated into the Greek language in what is known as the "Septuagint" Bible of Ptolemaic origin, which in itself was produced in an uncommon and impressive manner. So all the prophets of that version quoted were sanctified and vouched for by the Apostles, who also further reinforced that by quoting only from the Septuagint version rather than a Hebrew one.
It is commonly told among various early 2nd and 3rd century Christian theologians how Ptolemy Lagos had ordered that the Hebrew religious books be translated into Greek. The Ptolemys of Egypt, Greek rulers who the first Ptolemy founded after taking possession of Egypt as a general of Alexander the Great, after his death, highly esteemed recorded knowledge, that is, written knowledge. At that time, all things were written in scrolls rather than books. But anyone who came into Alexandria, the Greek capital city of Egypt, was required by law to allow their book to be copied. The Ptolemys were smart enough to know the value and power of knowledge.
So the Ptolemy I earlier mentioned wanted to have the Hebrew's knowledge as well. They realized that knowledge was to be found in all nations and races. They grabbed it from wherever they could find it and recorded it. So 70 Jews from Judah who were also skilled in the Greek language were obtained by Ptolemy to translate the Hebrew scrolls in to Greek. But Ptolemy, being unsure of the skill of the translators, or perhaps not trusting them, and apparently wanting the scrolls in an accurate form, very much, decided to separate the translators, isolating each one and having several all translate the same sections, giving different sets to each group of isolated individuals, to see if they would come up with the same thing. And that is exactly what happened.
It is not made clear whether just a few were given the same books/scrolls or not. As it is related by various early writers, all 70 were given the job of translating the same books. I assumed that given the long job that could be, that they might have just referred to the task in a general way, that there were 70 involved. But that all 70 each translated the whole Hebrew Bible and not say 5 or 10 individuals each doing a section is not clear. But the end result was that each translation was exactly like the others, thereby pleasing the king, Ptolemy, very much, assuring him that is was done correctly and quite likely with the blessing and inspiration of God upon it. Many of those times did not doubt or not believe in other people's gods. They simply did not believe these other gods were the only ones around. If indeed, all 70 men made a separate copy of the Old Testament Bible, then this accomplishment is even more striking that not an error or disagreement was to be found.
Even better, this was affirmed and confirmed, even authorized and overseen, by a neutral 3rd party, a Greek ruler, so as to have the benefit of 2 witnesses, one not having any discernable agenda or bias as the Jews, themselves, might have had. But in addition, the Apostles used it exclusively in their letters to various congregations and vouched for its reliability and passed that understanding down to those they preached to and it has been related by nearly every early writer of those times who bothered to write much. It was a very common account of those times. Part of the reason for that was to emphasize the break with the Jews after Jesus and the handing over of the gifts and miraculous works and all custodial care of the words and writings of God to the nations, commonly called Gentiles, who commonly spoke Greek in various parts of the Roman empire at that time.
God was preparing for that even before Christ by having a Greek translation made in a marvelous way to vouch for its authenticity and later to receive the endorsement of the son and those he sent forth.
And of course, anything coming from the Apostles was also
immediately understood as coming from God as the works which took
place through them were assumed to be from God (who else, right?). So
we accept their letters and prophecies as also being certain, even if
not fulfilled yet. And as time goes on we see those being fulfilled
and our faith is reinforced and assured.
These qualifications I list are vitally important to be recognized and used in examining whether a message or command is from God or not, even as the scripture says:
1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone forth into the world.
With these standards, we can determine not only things from God, as I showed in the case of prophets contained in the Septuagint, but also expose things not from God. All things not from God are from God's enemy, the one called Satan and Devil. Satan is a Hebrew word meaning resistor or rebel, and devil the Hebrew for liar and slanderer. In addition, many claim to have visions or messages from God. If this is so, then those visions should be harmonious with the rest of the scriptures that are already verified and certified by the Holy Spirit.
So if we see a bunch of future prophecies made and they are fulfilled, one after the other, and they are in the name of God and harmonize with the law and prophets, then it gives the remaining ones more credibility and reason to trust them. And if great men of powerful works make these prophecies, then we can trust them. Of course, it has been nearly 2000 years since the Apostles or Jesus were around. But as prophecies continue to come true and unfold in marvelous order and accuracy, it gives us good reason to trust these prophecies and the men of old that they came from, if we were not personal witnesses to the great works of those earlier times. Further, the men of old who gave them, left a large mark on the world with their deeds. The whole Roman empire was overcome with this very unpopular and persecuted religion that was antagonistic to the pagan gods of those times. There must have been something impressive behind the works of Christianity or its followers surely would have disappeared into insignificance. Then there is the archaeological evidence which I also propose is equally amazing. But that will have to wait for my book on that subject.
So we need these standards discussed to help determine what are
lying signs and wonders. We have already seen many practices
forbidden by God. And we know that truly great and powerful signs and
wonders have been chosen by God to be reserved only for Himself.
Satan and his angelic brothers whom we call demons, are very limited
in the power and scope of what they can do. So we are now going to
consider the many manifestations of Satan's lying signs and wonders
so as to avoid being misled by them as Eve was misled in the garden
of Eden and many have been misled since then. To be forewarned is to
These scriptures are considered along with many others in two other articles of mine, found in Related Articles at the end of this article. They bear relevance here, too, in smaller numbers of scriptures quoted.
Matthew 24:23 Then if any one says to you, 'Lo, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:9 His coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and miracles and lying wonders, 10 and in all deceit of unrighteousness in those being lost, because they did not receive the love of the truth in order for them to be saved. 11 And because of this, God will send to them a working of error, for them to believe the lie.
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
Revelation 13:13 And it does great signs, that even fire it causes to come down out of the heaven onto the earth before men.
Revelation 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons doing signs, which go forth to the kings of the earth, even of the whole habitable world to assemble them to the war of that day, the great day of God Almighty.
2 Corinthians 11:14 Did not Satan marvelously transform himself into an angel of light? 15 It is not a great thing, then, if also his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
From these we know there to be plenty of deceivers who try to
mislead us. They have various signs and wonders considered very
impressive by many, apparently. Not that they are that impressive but
it does not take that much to impress some. But it is made clear that
the devil would seem as if he was an angel of light and his earthly
servants would seem like ministers of righteousness and piety. But
they will be liars and deceivers whose works will be wicked. And
their purpose is to mislead people, as many as possible, including
the people of God, away from God. And they will be successful, too.
So we do not need to be unaware of what is and is yet going to take
place. We have been warned well.
Origen was a Christian writer and theologian of the early 3rd century (200's) AD. Here is what he had to say about this subject is his work, First Principles, Book 3, Chap. 3, section 3:
>> [Speaking about Christians] Now these effects we are to suppose are brought about in the following manner: As holy and immaculate souls, after devoting themselves to God with all affection and purity, and after preserving themselves free from all contagion of evil spirits, and after being purified by lengthened abstinence, and imbued with holy and religious training, assume by this means a portion of divinity, and earn the grace of prophecy, and other divine gifts.
So also are we to suppose that those who place themselves in the way of the opposing powers [opposed to God, referring to the devil and his angels, the demons], i.e., who purposely admire and adopt their manner of life and habits, receive their inspiration, and become partakers of their wisdom and doctrine. And the result of this is, that they are filled with the working of those spirits to whose service they have subjected themselves. <<
So even Origen way back then could see what it is that I am
suggesting the scriptures indicate. If you submit yourself or expose
yourself to the customs and practices which are allowed to the
demons, then you could become partakers of their wisdom and doctrine,
and receive their influence rather than God's. Submitting ourselves
to what he calls holy and religious training of God will be our best
protection and alert us to what to avoid so we don't come under the
Well, first, we read of false Christs and false prophets who will arise and show great signs and wonders. Not truly great but seemingly so. What would they be? Well, what were the original and legitimate great signs and wonders? We know about Moses and Egypt. Lots of things there. We know Jesus and the Apostles performed healings and resurrections, cast out demons, prophesied, and did many other great works, no doubt.
Now in "2 Thessalonians 2:9 His coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and miracles and lying wonders, and in all deceit of unrighteousness in those being lost." So here we see lying wonders, and deceit of unrighteousness, which also probably apply to the power and miracles, too. So I suspect that those great signs and wonders are also lying signs and wonders. Seemingly great but lies and deception just the same. They certainly would not be resurrections, or legitimate and marvelous healings of the incredible type that Jesus and the Apostles performed in their day.
Now over the centuries there have been lots of liars with some pretty lame "signs and wonders." And I will discuss them just below. But what Paul said above was not in reference to these fake sings and lies. This particular fraud is going to have much more impressive signs, though deceitful they will be, they will also be impressive. I'll deal with that after.
In past times, many have faked speaking in tongues, claim healings that can not be proved or disproved because of their subtle or questionable nature. Claimed prophecies, some of which were not very specific, or were kind of obvious anyway, or maybe they just get occasionally lucky. But those of the precise and amazing type that were given far in advance, such as those of the Bible were, have never been made by anyone else. Some Bible prophecies of a more specific nature were given 2500 years ahead of time. How's that for far-sighted? And the more general or vague ones were nearly 6000 years in advance.
And then we have the teachings, deceitful spirits, which I believe are not spirit creatures but spirits as in propaganda which is also what I believe is indicted in Revelation 16:13 by the three unclean spirits which are like frogs that come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet, the mouth being the place where they come from and therefore, what they are, words to accomplished something; namely, they are spirits of demons doing signs, which go forth to the kings of the earth, even of the whole habitable world to assemble them to the war of that day, the great day of God Almighty.
Spirits of propaganda, today propagated by the various media, indeed, help to promote this big lie that will culminate in the last 7 years before the very end, Judgment Day. We are constantly lied to, to confuse, bewilder, and overcome. But in past times, many have claimed to have received messages from God or been led by God. They had no real evidence to support their claims, but many went along with them, anyway. Some promote free sex or some resort to trickery and bullying as cult controllers who apply brute force to keep people enslaved.
In these last days, there more than the usual amount of lies and slander against us as was against Jesus, too. But we know from other words of Paul that I discuss in my other two articles previously mentioned, that our battle is not with flesh and blood but with spirit forces, words, ideas, thoughts, philosophies, propaganda and the like. We overturn these ideas raised up against God. Our battle is an intellectual one, really.
But modern day lies have expanded, as they now distort science and history, keep people in ignorance and darkness so that they can not discern the ridiculous political philosophy said to be in their best interests as they are lead to slavery and eventually, pre-mature death. Everything that is bad is said to be good and everything good is said to be bad. Everything that the world had believe for nearly 5900 years had been turned upside down and inside out and replaced with new treacherous ideas.
There have been many gods of the past. But in the time of the Greeks, a more unusual sort of thing occurred. After having obtained a knowledge of geometry and astronomy from the Babylonians and Egyptians, the Greeks became rather intrigued by the laws of nature they were beginning to discern and make use of. The more they beheld the order and predictability of nature, the more they began to further explore and define it, trying to go and peer into, and understand, on as deep a level as possible. They were in many ways, essentially scientists, but without some of the sophisticated instruments we now have to peer into the "unknown." So where they could not be certain, they often speculated and frequently treat this as established fact. In the process, they began to doubt that any god was behind any of it.
They saw man as responsible for much of what happened to himself. And they saw nature as just something that was and was explainable and not mysterious. They became your first agnostics and atheists in many ways. Not that all were as such, but it was a trend to some degree. In addition, there was plenty of Hebrew influence in their various poets and philosophers. In fact, Greeks had absorbed a considerable amount of things from all the various Mediterranean cultures. Socrates was a believer of one god as was Aristotle, though with different conclusions. Plato, had a number of ideas, not all of which were in harmony with each other. In ancient Greece, every idea imaginable was expressed and held by someone somewhere.
To their credit, the Greeks were great for focusing on minute details and making subtle distinctions in the world they examined, given the lack of instrumentation and measurement in many of their observations. Their language is a reflection of that. They have many words to distinguish various shades or subtleties of ideas and meanings. They began, what later would lead to incredible discoveries into the microscopic world and the macroscopic, too. They had lots of ideas that latter proved to have some merit. They discerned, without any real proof, atoms and the atomic world. They detected separate processes going on in the mind and soul that later were demonstrated in psychological and physiological research in our time. Of course, they also made some serious blunders, too. They would often speak a great deal about things which they knew little of and could not prove. And they tended to put great trust and emphasis on whatever they spoke about and reasoned upon as perhaps being indisputable or certain.
They certainly were not humble and did not refrain from overstating the certainty of what they professed. Perhaps it was their dogmatic style and certainty of conviction that impressed others. But their intricate reasonings and detailed, if not extravagant, depth to which they carried things and made distinctions, impressed quite a few people of the known world of that time and period. The Roman world would become enamored of Greek philosophy and it would become the rage of the empire for sometime. In fact, so impressive was this philosophy, that many Christians would be swept away by this seemingly wonderful and amazing Greek knowledge, "wisdom," and reasoning, the "science" of their day.
And let no one say it was not science. It definitely was. The problem was that the science of those Greek times depended on casual or plainly beheld observations that lacked any shrewd detail or exact measurements. They deduced what they did through observations that anyone could make. Their main weapon was often pure careful logic and reasoning. They paid much more attention to reasoning and logic than the science of our day and much less to the measurements and sophisticated instruments to measure or observe things. But the goal and intent was absolutely scientific. They wanted to be able to explain the natural world around them as we do today.
Some Christians were formerly students of Greek philosophy and would show it up for many of its failures. But though unaware of it, perhaps, they were also at times keeping and using some of it in their explanation of Christian doctrine, perhaps trying to make it more appealing to the Greeks. In time, the religion of Christianity would become thoroughly saturated with some of the nonsense of Greek philosophy till it was nothing like the real thing in the Bible. I will deal with this in detail in another article on the Soul. But Paul certainly did forewarn of such things in the next scripture which I believe was a direct indictment of the influence that would come from Greek philosophy.
Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.
Now that does not mean that Greeks offered nothing of any use. But one needs to be careful to distinguish our limited and ever growing and slow growing and ever changing understanding of our world around us and our ability to fathom it. We need to search for the great doctrines of God part from other influences, and then we can compare worldly knowledge with Bible knowledge to see where they might harmonize or not. but God's word is far more reliable than that of our ever changing and ever lying "knowledge" of corrupt humans with very questionable motives. The early post-Apostolic theologians and writers in the latter 2nd century AD onward, failed to do this. The greatest example would be in the discussion of the soul, a Greek influenced contrivance that was different from what was taught in the Bible. It derived much of its inspiration from Plato, who was the most popular of the Greek thinkers in Roman times.
It was by no means just the Greeks who influenced Christian doctrine. Zoroastrianism and other pagan philosophies and religions would all have their influence. Knowledge from all parts of the world would have a part in the corruption of Christianity as the Bible was ignored and strayed from. And what the Greeks started has also progressed even more in our day. Science, from the Latin language meaning "to know," has also put forth lots of philosophy and ideas that have no real merit or inherent means of proof but like the Greeks, they think they are quite smart and severely overestimate what they really can be sure of, which is not much.
To make it worse, though they have no "real" evidence, they do have complete control of all the media outlets and have them all assert that what is stated is proven fact. Because they are the "authority," and the only voice being promoted to most people who do not seek out small rare voices of dissent. So what is broadly and publicly asserted is taken to be the "truth."
Their theories, really more like a hypothesis, about evolution, is a fanciful imagining of how we came into existence. But like many things in Greek philosophy, there is no real backing to prove many things. In fact, there is little in physics that is certain, if the truth be told. But it won't be preached from the roof tops so we have to be aware and alert to these things. I think the worst thing going against Christianity today is that most know precious little about the bluff that science puts on. Christians don't know all the details and information to realize how empty and vain much of the subjective sciences in areas like anthropology, archaeology, sociology, and psychology truly are.
These various types of knowledge and philosophy have one purpose. That is to lead people away from God, their Creator and Lawgiver, who has their best interests at heart and wants to help them. So beware! Your world is trying to trick you for their own benefit and to your harm, and they want to harm God, as well.
But this does not mean that all science or philosophy is bad or harmful. Even God's people used geometry and plans to build or calculate. God Himself gave such plans and instructions to His servants. Moses as instructed in all the wisdom of Egypt. But we do want to be careful not to place man's knowledge and philosophy over God's. God's word should always take first place in our lives and shape our understanding of things.
Also, in regards to the many influences of past religions and
philosophies of a more religious or supernatural nature, there are
often accompanying signs and wonders of a lying deceitful nature
intended to fool us and others and lead us away from God. I will deal
with some of these now.
We have all likely heard of the paranormal, the spirit world, aliens from other worlds, psychic phenomena, and other fascinating mysteries that are often unexplainable from a scientific standpoint. Scientists, in their narrow view, easily write such things off without any serious consideration. They start with the idea and premise that such things are impossible, therefore, they can not be. Little wonder they always prove right. But since they are usually not witnesses to the phenomena reported, they are not in a legitimate position to rule out such things. A more reasonable scientist might explore the "what if" scenario, contemplating what can be assumed or inferred, if indeed, the phenomena is legitimate.
But the purpose of these phenomena and manifestations, if indeed, they are real ( and I do believe some are ), is also to mislead people away from God. They attempt to make it look like God is lying. But if we believe in the great works and wonders of God, and we can see the prophecies made so many years ago coming true, then we have enough reason to reject these marvelous but misleading manifestations designed to make us doubt God and pursue other beliefs and practices.
I suspect that some of the ghostly appearances and manifestations are real. They are not from God but they are real . . . sometimes. The same for UFO manifestations and many other unusual events and occurrences. So we will examine them one or several at a time to figure them out and what the demons might be trying to accomplish with them.
No doubt you have heard of fairies, goblins, ghosts, poltergeists, demons, UFO's, aliens, bigfoot, and many, many other monsters and creatures of myth and legend. What do many of them have in common? Let me show you.
Let us consider poltergeists and other spirits who often make appearances or manifestations of some sort.. What are their typical manifestations that we might all be familiar with? They often manifest themselves with scents, sometimes very unpleasant smells at that. They will commonly move things, turn things on and off, maybe break a few things. They might make some sounds and voices and perhaps scare people. Occasionally, they might even form an appearance such as a light or even a misty type of apparition as a person, known or unknown. They can often be very scary in their demeanor.
Now, what sort of manifestations do UFO's sometimes make. They often manifest themselves with scents, sometimes very unpleasant smells at that. They will commonly move things, turn things on and off, maybe break a few things. They may also make sounds. And they manifest themselves to people, but often seemingly without any tangible evidence as if they were only apparitions. They may imprint people's minds with experiences which may or may not be real. What we call alien encounters and abductions, often terrifying or sexual in nature.
If you read a few books about various UFO encounters I think you will see a trend. They tend to communicate telepathically, without words, through direct manipulation of one's mind. They also warn of impending doom and sometimes of hope or salvation by their means of intervention. Many psychic pursuits, condemned on the Bible, often lead to UFO encounters or interest in them.
How about bigfoot? They often manifest themselves with scents, almost always very unpleasant smells at that. They shake a house, vehicle, or trailer and terrorize the inhabitants, maybe. They move objects without leaving any physical trace of doing so, as in the cult classic movie of the early 70s, "The Legend of Boggy Creek." They also make scary sounds. And they manifest themselves to people as big ugly terrifying creatures. They are often very scary in their demeanor. I recommend a rare movie from the early 70's which I rented again perhaps around 1988. I believe it was called "The Legend of Boggy Creek." I think it puts the bigfoot in perspective. TV shows have often covered many reported sightings of these. But I have heard of other accounts as well where the main purpose of bigfoots seem to be primarily to terrorize and frighten. Minimal physical evidence left behind and what is left is questionable and disputable.
I believe that all 3 of these types of encounters and manifestations are all from the same source, demons, whose goal is to convince people of another existence, contrary to the of the Bible. They will offer various hopes such as salvation from spacemen or some other possibility. Or they might just be there to terrify and perplex. Bigfoots are a big tease, always offering something but never very much. But unlike UFO's or spirits, which could be impossible to detect by scientists, bigfoot should be no problem for scientists to detect with modern surveillance equipment such as infrared detectors, motion detectors, sophisticated sound detection and other such equipment used from planes and choppers from the sky. And given the numerous appearances sighted by many witnesses, there should be something to find and yet never anything very tangible.
It appears to me that these demons, if these manifestations are a result of them, love to tease and jerk people around, frustrating their every attempt to nail something down or prove something. What alludes scientists and seems inconceivable to them is that there could be creatures that do not have a physical form or existence, something outside of matter, energy, and the laws of physics. And what is worse, they are just big teasers. Completely out of the realm of what scientists are willing to accept. So they simply deny everything, without a truly objective consideration. Notice I did not say investigation because how can you investigate or prove something that is not subject to physical laws? This is why many do not believe in God, because they can not see or touch or prove Him, at least by their demanding and unreasonable standards. So this one is not apt to be settled anytime soon.
But though we can not detect or prove that there is life beyond the physical realm, we do see the manifestations and effects of such forces of life. It is just that scientists, unlike courts, do not accept any eye witness testimony, considering it all, too unreliable. And certainly there is sometimes unreliability to be found. But you can not REASONABLY discredit all testimony when there is plenty of it to be had by a number of different types of people and circumstances. While eye witnesses should be carefully weighed, you do not completely ignore them. It is not a reasonable and proper method of any sort of investigation.
God's standard in the Bible is that at the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses (without sufficient contradictory testimony, of course), a matter should be accepted and established as true. I find the many witnesses I have seen on TV over the year in regards to creatures, UFOs and aliens, and various spirit phenomena, to be very compelling due to the many who have related such things and what they reveal. For whatever is behind much of it, it is not science or justice to just outright ignore it. But if one admits it, then we are left to explain it and only the Bible seems to do that very much. Of course, the Bible suggests demonic spirits behind much of it and some do not like this particular interpretation. but alternative explanations often fail to explain contradictory manifestations very well.
Nevertheless, I should point out that some very credible researchers with more integrity than average have embarked on paranormal studies. Among them, impressive to me, was the research of John Mack of Harvard University who believed that the many people who had allegedly experienced abduction by a UFO seemed to have much in common and deserved an objective, unbiased investigation for which he published a book with his results. It received lots of criticism, as you would expect. But it was a book worth buying and reading to get a feel for the forces behind these manifestations and phenomena. Critics did not feel John proceeded in a proper scientific way, which was never to investigate it in the first place. But he proceeded as best as he could with what little he had. He made use of what was available to him as any proper investigator of any type would do.
He relied on personal testimony and accounts, which was all that was left to him. "Scientists" did not feel this was sufficient. They are entitled to their opinion. One professor even faked being a UFO abductee and submitted to an interview with John Mack and criticized Mack for not detecting her. By the way, you'll find most frauds come from academics! But indeed, Prof. Mack had no way of knowing if any interviews were legitimate. But he thought he might see what he came up with anyway. But if academics followed their own criteria, they would not be able to prove anything, either. For one, they find nothing at all to be unusual in all these people having these experiences. Not unusual? Really? That, it self, is quite odd to me. A fascination psychological study would seen in order, if nothing else. But by their won criteria, a good deal of the realm of psychology would have to be disbanded and thrown away, as well; not to mention much of their political rhetroic. I believe Mr. Mack uncovered some relevant and useful information.
But I do not think it fair or judicious to completely ignore eye witness experience. The UFO phenomenon is too pervasive and similar to imagine that it is a so called mass hysteria or some other ridiculous explanation that can not be proved or demonstrated. Same for bigfoot, and certainly for spirit manifestations like poltergeists, ghosts, or whatever. In fact, many of the mythological creatures may have been unusual manifestations of the spirit creatures we call demons who attempt to deceive and mislead with their lying signs, wonders, and manifestations.
I also propose that some of this phenomenon may, in fact, be the work of secret government agencies and secret military UFO technology. Mind control and implanted memories are not out of the realm of possibility, either. It is something you might want to look into.
Do not want to be fooled by these phenomena, though. There is no immediate life after death, or another salvation or anything even close. There is only one hope that we should embrace, who manifests Himself in good, healthy, meaningful, and purposeful ways. It is the God who goes by the name of Jehovah and who was made known to us as the heavenly Father by His only-begotten son, Jesus, and revealed to all the other nations by Jesus' Apostles after him. This is the God and hope that we should adhere to.
Now along with this, there is another phenomena. It is the sometimes intriguing encounter of a child who seems to know lots of details about what they believe was their previous existence in another life. They have all sorts of memories of another circumstance and life and seem to be able to verify it by showing people where they used to live and reveal many very personal details that would never be known outside the family they claim to have once belonged to. Arthur C. Clark has featured such things on his TV series of exploring different strange phenomena. How do we explain such curious findings? They would seem to verify re-incarnation to some.
Again, if demons can make strange appearances and transmit thoughts to our minds, as indeed, even God can do through dreams and visions, then how hard would it be to give someone some false memories? Even well meaning therapists today can unintentionally give or create false memories in people's minds. So think what they could do intentionally; and they probably have, too. If there are spirit creatures who have control of our physical world, they could certainly do so. And there is certainly the motive on the demons' parts to do so. This to make us think that God lied or got it wrong, or that there is something He neglected to reveal to us or whatever. The design is to mislead us to another religion and belief system that will keep us away from the truth of the almighty and only true God of the universe, our heavenly Father, reveal to us as Jehovah in ancient times but more recently revealed to us by His son as our heavenly Father.
Last but not least are modern day psychics, who do not always specify where their power or revelations come from. Edgar Cayce was one such psychic. He prescribed many cures, some of which may have worked, but not all. He told of lost civilizations as many have, but we have not been able to confirm them. There is also Nostradamus. What we have to be aware of here is that some prophecies may be clear enough and worded carefully enough to fit an event quite well. Or they may tell of the location of some lost place. Maybe they reveal the location of a murder victim. And they may even be effective on many occasions. Maybe some prophecies come true. But they all have often failed at more than one place or time. They are hit or miss.
Here again, demons love to jerk people around and play with their heads. They tantalize and intrigue. But they always come up short of being reliable to any great degree. Further, their prophesies and predictions never seem to predict very far ahead in time. Or if they do as might possibly be the case with Nostradamus, then the prophecies will often be so vague and ambiguous that we can not be certain what it is they predict. It could apply to all sorts of things. And lastly, they usually do not have anything to do with God's purposes and goals, promoting His brand of worship.
Besides, if you consider how Nostradamus advocates have interpreted and
applied his predictions, you will note that many of them were suppose
to happen in the 1990's and did not. So at least some of his prophecies utterly
failed. So we need not be in awe or fear of these false prophets.
Besides, if we are to believe these charlatans, then let them produce
some works and signs to verify who the source of their guidance and
power is. And further, let it harmonize with the Bible. If they can
not do these things, then what good are they? They are just hot air
and strong wind.
Lets be honest! If we are given a message from someone allegedly talking with the dead, and we are given messages and details that someone could not possibly know about us, there is no question that the works are real, providing that hidden powerful microphones were not placed around to gather information, before hand. I do not dispute that in any way. They could be real. Or maybe we experience a dream, a vision, or a dead one appears and tells us something that turns out to be true. I agree it is a real phenomenon. And lets face it, if we believe we are talking to someone who died and we loved them very much, there is every desire to want to believe such a thing. Death is not so nice. Having our loved ones alive in some manner is very reassuring and relieving.
I want to share an experience I had at age 7 in the early summer after 1st grade got out. My 2 aunts, much younger than my mother, their sister, and 6 and 10 years older than me, would pretend to perform magic in front of me and my brother, nearly 3 years younger than me. They were good enough at it and me being perhaps a bit gullible, I fell for some of it. I had discounted some, but did not figure out all of it. So I assumed that maybe they were doing this out of "faith," for after all, did not Jesus walk on water due to faith and Pete sink, only because of lack of faith.
Yes, my logic was flawed since I did not know about the prohibitions against magic in the Bible. But I really believed. My parents did not make big efforts to correct me. My father was more critical but my mother just past it off. the faith argument was hard for them to refute, but it should not have been but they did not know the Bible, though my father in particular, did believe in God and the Bible. My mother, raised by a Catholic mother, all the same, despised Catholicism due to the missionaries who would come around every year in the far northern Maine. She hated their obscene probes into what sort of "sins" she might have to confess or not.
But anyway, after one visit with my aunts, I came home and decided to try this magic stuff myself. Why not? It just took faith, so I thought and I knew I was as capable of true faith as anyone on earth. So lets do it, right? I used a pillow like my aunts would have us do. I would bury my face in the pillow and say magic words and wait on God. I was near the front of the living room near the font door. The plastic toy tractor I was trying to make disappear was on the other side of the living room, where we also ate in the corner. The kitchen was entered at the left of that end and led to the back door going out to the back yard.
My parents and brother were out there playing and talking. So this was a good time to try my craft, so I thought. I tried a couple times with no success. Then I gave it a real hard try one more time. I took my face out of the pillow, having been on my knees bent over. It was gone. I kid you not. Well, I was so shocked and dumbfounded. I immediately suspected that maybe my parents did it. There was not sound of anyone coming in and they did not know what I was even doing, but still, it had to be them, so I thought. so I went out and asked them if they just took my tractor. They said they had done no such thing. Thing is, it would have been impossible, in retrospect, for them to have done it. They clearly were preoccupied outside. It happened too fast and too quiet. Not a sound.
I went back rather perplexed. My next thought was whether I was going to be able to get it back or not. But I had decided it certainly was gone by legitimate magic. but having chosen random magic sounding words, I did not know what to say to guarantee its return. But I was going to give it a try. I do not recall if it worked the 1st time or not, but I made an attempt and there it was, back again. I was listening more carefully for sound as well. I never forgot that experience.
What are my thoughts about it now? I believe it happened, legitimately. But I do not think it likely that it was God. Given the magic words and general practice of it, it falls under the province of the Devil and his "servants." Luckily, no harm came to me, though I could have fallen for it but did not. But it was the wrong thing to do. But I also suspect that God knew my heart so that no undue harm would result. I was allowed to be tested and tempted, obviously. But these things can happen. I can not give you proof. But I know what I experienced.
But we have to understand who and what is behind these real manifestations. It is not really our dead loved ones or whoever. It is the spirits in opposition to God who would like us to believe these things or practice them, contrary to what God has said is the case. They are in the spirit realm, but they are able to observe the many secret details of our lives so they can supply us with the sort of information that no human could. So they can make it seem perfectly real and who would know the difference unless they were let in on what is going on. And that is what God has done through the Bible. He has alerted us to the tricksters in the spirit realm.
Now this is not what we would want to hear ss we had once been convinced that our loved ones were still alive, though as spirits, and perhaps it is comforting to think they are still alive in many ways. But whether we want to believe or not, we need to believe what the Bible says. It is for our safety, protection, and especially, our everlasting life and chance to be resurrected, brought back to life, and maybe have our loved ones brought back, too. That should give us the courage to accept what God tells us about the liars in the spirit realm who love to deceive us and put a wedge between us and God.
Encountering powerful telepathic creatures of supposed benevolence such as UFO's are said to be, can also be appealing, especially when they may not require as much strict morality as the Bible does. But it is a lie and should be rejected. Their appearances and other related phenomena are manifestations similar to spirits and poltergeists and we should beware. If you look into the subject enough, you will see that the benevolence is rather questionable. Many women have been allegedly raped by supposed space creatures, either visibly or invisibly. Not what I would call benevolent. There are many other ways in which they seem to often terrorize rather than inspire. By their fruits you will know them.
And when we see a child take us to another village and expose the details of another person formerly living, we got to admit something is up. How is a young child to know these things. The ideas must have been transferred somehow. When given the explanation that they were this other person at another time, how are we to know differently unless someone could tell us convincingly so? But someone is telling us what is really behind it. Will we listen?
One big problem we all have is that many of us love our parents and maybe our culture as a whole. We might have been raised believing in these "lying" signs and wonders and the beliefs that go with them. We have a fondness for them because they came from our parents and others that we love and respect. So it takes a great deal of soul searching to be certain of who is right and who is wrong. Is the Bible's information believable and correct? The only advice I can give you is that where there is so much as stake, and the search for, and consideration of, this subject deserves a lot of attention before making a decision. God promises so much and warns us of such dangers that we want to be careful about making a hasty decision. I have other articles that deal more with whether we can or should believe the Bible or not.
But for those who are Christians to begin with, we need not be shaken off the good course of following the Bible due to these sometimes truly impressive other worldly manifestations. While quite a marvel, they pale in comparison to bringing people back to life after rotting for 3 days or restoring withered limbs to perfect and complete form, restoring eyesight and may other miracles of far greater note. And when do we ever see these channelers/mediums perform the great things that God's ancient servants did? When did these channelers and other such psychic types ever defy the laws of physics and part the Red Sea, kill all the first born children, call fire down from heaven, or the many other breath taking marvels performed in the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel and Jesus, His son?
And in our time, we see the many grand prophecies that so vividly
describe the age of the industrial revolution and the many things it
would bring to bear on the earth, the final climax of the earth and
its inhabitants in many unique details that we now see coming true.
We have much to stand in awe of and marvel at. What other psychics
and fortune tellers can predict things 2000 years in advance in such
detail? The signs, the wonders, the miracles of the false prophets
are nothing compared to the marvelous things God provides to His
believers and to the whole world, if they are willing to take some
time to consider the evidence.
I am going to summarize the kinds of lying signs and wonders.
1. There are the fake imitators of legitimate signs and wonders of the early days of Christianity. But they are empty and powerless. They are lies and Jesus said I do not know you, get away from me you workers of crime. There are also those who twist the scriptures to gain their own following for their own desires. They are liars and deceivers.
2. We have the spirits raised against God, the propaganda and empty philosophies, both of ancient origins and of modern ones, too. It began in ancient Babel, and grew from there. Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians added things along the way. Greek philosophy would become very prominent in Rome and Christianity with science and political philosophy like the more recent political correctness, misleading people away from God; and many have been fooled by science and political ideas into rejecting many teachings of God, from Constantine "the Great," and succeeding political kingdoms, supported by apostate Christianity best represented by those political whores of Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy in the East.
3. And we have the other worldly signs, perhaps producing real phenomena at times, but with the purpose of taking people away from Christ. Even though they are sometimes impressive, we know not to believe them for they are not followed with the same impressive works that God's true servants performed nor are they accompanied by the impressive prophecies of the Bible. We know who is behind these signs and wonders, the demons who are in opposition to God.
But there is an additional concern to address. As far as I can determine, especially when considering the writings of 2nd and 3rd century writers in addition to the Bible, is that not only would there be many false prophets and false messiahs/christs, also called antichrists, but there was to be one in particular. I believe that 2 Thessalonians 2 had a primary fulfillment in things yet to happen and that predict one very particular false christ/messiah, who is called "the false prophet" in Revelation, who wields a lot of power and will mislead many. Jesus' words about messiahs who claim to be here or there most particularly applied to this one. While the words of Paul, Jesus, or others could and do have a fulfillment in many people in the last 2000 years, they have an ultimate fulfillment just before the very end. The prophet Daniel reveals much about this one as well.
To lean more about this person, commonly called the antichrist by most today, check out Related Articles at the end of this article. I'll mention a little bit more here about him in the next section.
The Ultimate Deception

There is another "spirit" that has been lingering around and promoted with great energy since Christ died and Jerusalem and its temple were destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. It was a big problem in Paul's writings and in Acts. And it continued to be the biggest problem plaguing Christianity throughout its existence. Do you know what it it? Well, in its early days of Christianity, it was known as Judaizing, trying to drag people back into the law, the ceremonial law in particular. It got so bad, that Popes and Councils convened to declare, confirm and make it clear that Sunday. the 1st day of the week, as the day of observance, and not the last day sabbath on Saturday. This was declared at the Coucil of Laodicea, along with this statement: "Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday, but shall work on that day. "
But it would continue to be a point of confusion, as people did not bother to learn their religion well, and why they did what they did. So they would continue to get confused between the sabbath of the Mosaic Law and the 1st day observance of the rise of Christ and his ascendance to heaven on Pentecost, when spirit was poured out on the whole congregation of Christians gathered there. Powerful signs and wonders would continue to reinforce this by means of the Apostles.
But less observed in a review of history was the fact that Jews were the instigators of trying to make Christians observe the ritual laws such as circumcision, dietary habits, keeping the sabbath and festivals, now empty observances. For the law and the prophets were until John (the Baptist), says Jesus. Do you believe him? Jews in general in those early times hated this new Christian movement, anyway. But as time went on, a new spirit started to become manifest.
It became extraordinarily prominent as the Middle Ages began and kicked off with the arrival of the Knights Templar and the religious "Crusades." Their goal? To take over Jerusalem, for the sake of "Christian" pilgrimages. But my suspicion is that they also had plans to rebuild the temple but they could not hold onto Jerusalem long enough to accomplish that. But they did a lot of excavating under the original foundation of the temple area, with lots of tunnels and supporting arches here and there. They had great ambitions for it all. I suspect that they would have even had a false messiah come along had things worked out more to their liking. But God was possibly against it at that time, or at least circumstance was.
But since that time, not only has Judaizing continued unabated, but Zionizing has also grown very much in popularity. Many Jews have hoped for such a thing. But more odd is that many Christian denominations also seem to support this and worse, believe it is what the Bible foretells and promotes. It does sort of between the lines infer the temple will be built again since the antichrist/man of sin is going to sit down in it, but it is not from God and it rejects the sacrifice of God's son and all that goes with that.
Now let me make it clear that rebuilding the temple, were it only to serve as a museum piece, for instance, and not infringe on others' rights and worship, and was done with approval of all and objections of none, this would not be a problem. But if it is rebuilt so that worship of God by means of this temple be reestablished and promoted as a legitimate path to pleasing God, then this is an abomination and sacrilege, and is basically the equivalent of devil worship, since it is outright rebellion against God's provision of His son as the real temple sacrifice, offered once for all time to all, if they would accept.
This Zionizing is reaching epic proportions now. And are the Christian preachers supporting this Satanic plot. I say this because not only does it renounce the sacrifice of Jesus, but the goal is also to introduce us to a false phony Christ, an imposter and pretender who lies and deceives. This is what the Bible has fully revealed in mysterious prophetic symbols, all by about 96 AD. That is over 1900 years ago. Very impressive! The counterfeit Christ has not arrived yet. In fact, the temple has not been rebuilt yet. But the Bible says it will be, before its all over.
These are the great deceptions being planned, launched, promoted, and designed to mislead all the earth into accepting and going along with this supposed "Jesus." Its been going on now for sometime. It began in earnest with the Balfour Declaration. It moved a step closer with the establishment of the state of Israel. It will culminate with the temple being rebuilt and the Antichrist arriving. Its a sure thing.
But I suspect that a huge war will be used to gain enough control of the general Mid-East area so that none may oppose a rebuilding of the temple. Either that, or a big war will erupt and then antichrist will arrive with his extremely advanced technology via UFOs and other such things thought not to exist right now, though in truth, existing in secret among the military weapons and hiding places. These are also of those lying signs and wonders to fool and trick the people into accepting the antichrist as being who he says he is. He will use this advanced technology to stop the war and bring peace, but only for a very short time, and then once everyone has accepted, except for real Christians, then those who go along with this charade, will soon die in huge numbers never seen before or though possible.
So what I shall address here is what false signs and wonders this fellow may perform in the sight of all. These are possibilities, they are not certainties. But I believe that Satan is clever enough as are his earthly followers who want to deceive and mislead Christians. If Christians have misunderstandings and are wrong is some or many of their understandings, and have the wrong expectations, Deceivers could use this to their advantage by making these wrong ideas and wrong understandings of prophecy to come true.
Some believe that the temple of God must be rebuilt. It does not need to be rebuilt, but what if it were rebuilt and the false prophet supported it? Would it fool anyone? I be it would! I am sure it will happen. What if they were to find an ark of the covenant? Would some be impressed? I bet they would. I bet an ark will be found. Perhaps even the so called holy grail/chalice of which legends exist, even though the Bible says nothing of such a thing, maybe it would fool some. I would not be surprised to see one be presented as found.
Now many believe the scripture of Zechariah 14 to be a literal action of Jesus. But that is an error for 2 reasons. First because of the way the Bible was corrupted, the name of God, Jehovah, was replaced with LORD by most Bible's and people have mistaken it to apply to Jesus. Here is the scripture to review from Greens Literal Translation (GLT) which puts God's name back in the Bible where it belongs:
3 And Jehovah shall go out and fight against those nations, like the day He fought in the day of battle.
4 And His feet shall stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east;
and the Mount of Olives shall divide from its middle, from the east even to the west, a very great valley.
And half of the mountain shall move toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
Given that people think this will be Jesus and be a literal fulfillment, what if Jesus came down out of the sky and landed right there? But the return of Jesus will not be a physical literal one. But some do not know or believe that. Maybe he comes down in a UFO type space craft and claim we did not understand the exact manner of his fulfillment, that it was to be a space craft. UFO's might figure prominently in various lying signs and wonders. How would we know if its origins were man-made or out of this world? The advanced revealed technology might impress some quite a bit, even as our current technology would have made quite an impression to ancient people.
As well, Jesus was said to be caught up in the clouds and would return the same way. UFOs are said to be able to create clouds to hid themselves. Will this also be a sign claimed? I am sure all sorts of BS and hot air will be dumped on us. But only fools will fall for it. Fire (lightning) may be called down out of heaven (the sky) at will. Many things are possible.
Our alleged secret military ability to be able to control the weather, perhaps an ability to trigger earthquakes and many other abilities have been alleged by some as secret technologies waiting to be revealed or used and perhaps already in use. It is all at least possible. All these things could be used to mislead and deceive people who do not know the word of God and what He predicted and requires of us. Real Christians will not be fooled or misled by these seemingly miraculous impressive signs and wonders. Even if space creatures or angels out of heaven should declare a good news other than that which we have heard from the Apostles and Christ, we should reject them and remain faithful to and trust, only the Bible, the word of God!
It should be known and understood that Nikola Tesla had, near to 1900, discovered many amazing secrets of electricity that are still denied to this day. But he drew up plans and predictions of what we now call UFOs. He demonstrated how to create earthquakes through resonance frequency. How to sue that principle with electricity as well. He said he could built weapons of electricity that could take planes right out of the sky. Weather is also easily controlled by manipulating the ionosphere which Tesla also used in his designs and experiments. All the things he designed and predicted are now alleged to exist in secret and I, personally, do not doubt any of it for even a minute.
Tesla used to be laughed at and mocked. Said to be a dreamer, but not a practical realist. The truth was, those in power knew his stuff was authentic. They simple wanted to keep it secret and to themselves to use at later times if things got out of hand with the more primitive technologies. why play all your cards when you don't have to, right?
So technology has been held back and suppressed so that the real secret tech can be kept secret and the known public knowledge allowed to remain woefully behind, so that the world may be kept in darkness and ignorance, and quite weak, in comparison with the secret advanced stuff. Military ability is always far in advance of known public industrial technology.
As well, While Tesla used to be laughed at, he is now beginning to be admitted as a genius and brilliant far beyond his years. Know what that means? The must be close to revealing this technology Tesla had long ago predicted and designed. Once it is here, there will be no denying it then. So they are getting us ready. Since 2005, far more honest decent evidence of UFO sightings and phenomena are now being discussed and admitted as possibilities, though always referred to as "alien" "other world" technologies. We could never do that here on earth, even if Tesla designed such things 100 years ago ;-) [Let he who has ears listen]. So get ready for UFO technology, "aliens," and maybe some "gods," too, for all we know. Certainly a "Christ," for sure.
This is the ultimate lie and deception that they are going to try to put over on us and most are going to fall for it. Not one of them is written in the book of life. You have been warned and like never before. I do not know of anyone preaching what I have here and on the rest of my site. If you can find even one other soul saying things like this, please, by all means, point it out to me. I want to meet him or her and shake their hands.
But you will find hordes preaching that Jews have a separate path to God. Its a lie. Jesus is the only way to God! They say the temple must be rebuilt for God. Lies! They say Jews and Israel are God's chosen people, now as ever. Lies! They were chosen for the sake of Abraham, but they were ultimately rejected when they rejected Christ. They can still yet be saved, but it will only be by accepting Christ and his ways and directions, in behalf of God, the Father.
These phony preachers will tell you all to go off to war and fight for God and His chosen people. Do not go after them, do not fight their worst war yet. This one will likely bring the antichrist and you do not want to be found helping the devil and his wicked cause. Friendship with the world is enmity with God, says James 4:4, I think. You got to get this one right or you will die. The time is indeed, almost at hand. Not much time left now. Watch, and be awake!
Now in order to get a much
better understanding of this prophetic antichrist, you should, by all means
check out my article devoted strictly to that subject and linked at the end of
this article. Nothing else like it!
I believe that what we covered in this article should show why the Bible should be our only guide. The purpose of the great powerful miraculous works of God was to authorize the words and teachings of those through who the works took place. God wanted to communicate with us and He wanted us to be able to trust that communication. So He supplied amazing works to give us a reason to trust and believe that communication. It is the communication that is desirable and important. It is the word of God which Jesus said we live by, not miracles and wonders. The miracles and wonders give us the reasons to trust those written words.
Matthew 4:4 It has been written: "Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word going out of the
mouth of God."
[Jesus was actually quoting what Moses had written in Deuteronomy 8:3.]
2 Timothy 3:
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you
for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
and for training in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The Bible, the word of God, is quite useful, isn't it? So if we were to experience a vision, have dream, maybe hear a voice; then we want to test the "spirit" out by comparing it to the message of the Bible. If it does not match up with what the scriptures require, then it is not from God.
Some religions say that they are the only one true religion and that God reveals things through their church or religion as well as through the Bible. Well, it should either agree with what is formerly said in the Bible, or it should be accompanied by powerful works which are witnessed by believer and non-believer alike. If there are not great works and it does not match with the Bible. It can not be true or valid. Said another way, if I am expect to believe they are from God and adding something to the Bible, then they better be able to raise someone from the dead! Not "clinically" dead for 5 minutes but more like dead for 3 days, at least.
Maybe someone will want to add something to the Bible. But John was the last surviving apostle that was qualified to add anything to the Bible or bless someone else's written work. So we can't have any additions after that. Some will say that they were written before the death of John but not revealed until after. But any book must be written and recognized by God's properly authorized channel which was Israel and its priesthood, until the death, resurrection, and heavenly ascension of Jesus. And the Apostles after that. So John had to authorized it in order for it to be valid. Without his knowledge and blessing, there can not be any hidden and later revealed books. So such claims are not possible. I discuss this more in another article called "How We Got the Bible," which I link to at the end of this article.
Any book is required to be blessed by those who perform powerful works. If the book is not attested to by one of God's authorized agents who performs powerful works as proof of his authority received from God, then that book can not be recognized. The Holy Spirit verified all the writings of the Apostles and who they also authorized. For instance, Mark wrote the gospel of Mark, who was not an apostle nor did he have the same great powers the Apostles possessed, but his work received the blessing and authorization from the Apostle Peter, who was a witness to Marks' work. Luke was not blessed with the powers of the Apostles but his work was also authorized by the Apostle Paul.
Books must always have the blessing and recognition of those who are dramatically blessed with powerful gifts of the spirit. That is how we know we can trust them. So the only books that have that kind of blessing are contained in the modern Protestant Bibles of today such as the King James Version, the Revised Standard Version, and other such Bibles that do not accept the books of the apocrypha as inspired. Now this does not mean the Protestants are without fault of that those Bibles mentioned belong to them. It is just that they commonly accept those Bibles and rightly so. Nearly all Christian religions recognize those Bibles and the collection of books contained in them.
So the only way to be sure about guiding spirits or messages is to
use the Bible as our only certified guide to what God has to say
about things. Only the Bible is verified with the many signs and
wonders of God. Only the Bible deserves to be our guide. No churches
can claim the same authorization and certification. Not one! And what
has been recognized by the early churches is all that we can safely
and securely depend on. Later, formerly "hidden" additions, can not be
accepted or believed since they were not known or published during the days of
the Apostles and approved by the Apostles.
The Apostles put the seal on the Bible. For then on in, the Great
Apostasy has set in and only the Bible comes to us with reliable
authority which is why we say "Sola Scriptura," meaning "solely the
scriptures" or "only the Bible." By that we mean that only the Bible
is used as an authority and justification for what to believe or why
to believe it.
So we do not want to be surprised at the many and sometimes even somewhat impressive signs and wonders of Satan. We have been told long in advance of his great plans to deceive and we do not need to be fooled by them if we are awake and alert. Their goal always, is to mislead Christians, if possible, and the world, too, as they are gathered together to war against God and His faithful ones here on earth who have not been fooled and misled. The very best and in fact, the only way to combat these vain deceptions and missiles of the devil is to have a deep intimate knowledge and understanding of God's word, the Bible, and what it means for us.
